Google Consent Mode v2

Exactly what the visitor allowed. Nothing more.

For traffic from the European Economic Area, Google’s conversion measurement and audiences depend on consent signals. Consentia sends all seven Consent Mode v2 signals.

Signals

What Google receives, case by case.

Default values are sent before any Google tag starts and are updated as soon as the visitor decides.

When the visitor chooses by category, statistics and marketing are passed on separately.

How it behaves, stage by stage.

BEFORE

Denied by default

Every signal is “denied” except security_storage. No advertising or statistics cookies are stored.

CONSENT

Full measurement

Conversions, audiences and remarketing work as usual for visitors who have consented.

REJECTION

Choice respected

No advertising or statistics data is stored. Google may model conversions without identifying visitors.

Integration

Works with your existing setup.

Consentia passes the signals to Google Ads, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and the Google & YouTube app if they are already installed. Alternatively, it can load the Google tag with your store’s IDs.

  • Campaign attribution (url_passthrough): the source of a visit is kept between pages, even without cookies.
  • Data protection on rejection (ads_data_redaction): when ad storage is denied, ad click identifiers are removed.
  • Wait time (wait_for_update): how long Google tags wait for the visitor’s choice before sending data.

Questions

About the Google integration.

Do I need IAB TCF or a Google-certified CMP?

Not for an online store. IAB TCF and CMP certification are aimed at publishers, meaning sites that sell advertising space. A store advertising its products needs Consent Mode v2.

How can I check that Google receives the signals?

With the Google Tag Assistant extension. On page load the signals show “denied” (except security_storage); after “Accept all” they change to “granted”.

Does it work with Google Tag Manager?

Yes. Consent signals are sent before the container loads, and tags with consent checks enabled respect them.

Consent, taken seriously.

Consentia will soon be available on the Shopify App Store. For details, or to be notified at launch, get in touch.
